Cabinet Care for Your Clock
Methods of way to care of your grandfather clock cabinet depend on the age and condition of the grandfather clock. If your clock has a lacquer finish found on all quality grandfather clocks regardless of age, you may use the following instructions.
Grandfather Clock with Scratches on the Finish:
If your grandfather clock has scratches on the finish, you may cover the scratches with the following process.
Take a clean absorbent cloth like a wash cloth or tee-shirt you will need to discard after use. Apply a very light coat of Old English scratch cover over the finish about 2 – 3 square feet at a time. Old English scratch cover comes in light and dark, dark works best for most finishes. For dark woods like mahogany and cherry use OLD ENGLISH Dark Wood Scratch Cover. For medium to light woods like pine and oak use OLD ENGLISH Light Wood Scratch Cover. Continue until you cover the entire case of the grandfather clock case. Let the scratch cover penetrate the wood for a few minutes, then wipe clean with another absorbent cloth. Be careful not to get any on your clothes as it will stain fabrics. Wipe lightly and remove as much of the excess scratch cover as possible. Spray a quality polish such as Guardsman or Old English polish on another cloth and lightly cover the case. Do not spray the polish directly on the case. Repeat until the cloth shows no residue of the scratch cover as you would not want to brush up against the grandfather clock and have any residual scratch cover stain or clothes. Proper cabinet care for your grandfather clock will help you protect your investment.
Grandfather Clock without Scratches on the Finish:
Dust the clock using a soft cotton cloth or a Swiffer. You may remove dust or debris in cracks and crevices with a paint brush. Spray a quality polish such as Guardsman or Old English polish on another cloth and lightly cover the case. Do not spray the polish directly on the case. After a few minutes, wipe the case clean removing any excess polish.
Cleaning the Glass on a Grandfather Clock:
Begin by removing excess dust that has settled on the glass with a Swiffer or soft cloth. After this you can then spray a quality glass cleaner on a lint free or micro-fiber clock then proceed to wipe the surface clean. Your cleaning actions should be gentle, and followed by wiping with a dry cloth to remove any streaks or remaining solution. Do the cleaning away from direct sunlight, because uneven drying of the glass surface tends to leave streaks. Spray a misting of your glass cleaner on a coffee filter and remove any lint or dust that may remain. The coffee filter is absorbent and will not leave any dust.
